The 3 C’s of Branding

The 3 C’s of branding are clarity, consistency and constancy.

You’ve got to be clear on who you are and who you are not. You’ve got to be consistent in your message and all communications. And, you’ve got to be constantly in front of your target market everywhere.

When you have all three elements, you have a strong brand.

Clarity in branding is about being clear about what your brand stands for and what it does not stand for.

Some inexperienced marketers think that if they can make a brand that appeals to everyone, they’ll have more customers. But it doesn’t work like that. If you try to be all things to all people, your brand will be unclear and never stand out. You probably will have a hard time appealing to anyone.

So, don’t try to please everyone. Instead, think about eliminating people from your market. Focus on only those people you would most enjoy doing business with. As for everyone else, you can ignore them or even repel them.

When you make it clear what you do not stand for, you create clarity in your branding. You will get people on your side who share your common enemy.


A clear brand needs to stay consistent.

There is no right and wrong about what a brand should stand for and what it should stand against. It depends on what kind of people you personally like doing business with.

If you want to do business with people who are looking for free money, then go right ahead. But at least stick to it. What you can’t do is be speaking to broke and desperate people one day, and try to appeal to high net worth individuals the next day.

Decide what your brand will be about and stay consistent with it.


A great brand is useless if no one ever sees it. Your brand needs to be constantly in front of your target market.

You can’t send out 5 emails one week and then nothing for 4 weeks. The more your marketing is in front of your audience, the more effective your brand will be. You want your brand to be visible and always front of mind for your audience.

Never let your brand slip their minds. That’s what constancy is about.
