How to Profit From Your Story of Adversity

Adversity becomes whatever you make of it.

If you’ve lived through adversity, there’s no reason it needs to be a liability to you. It can be an asset that you profit from.

Not only does adversity give you the strength to handle the problems that business and life throw at you, but a story of overcoming adversity can be an effective sales device when you share it with others.

EVERYONE HAS A STORY

Tom Beal had heard many times that a story of overcoming adversity could be a powerful asset in marketing. However, he always felt that he did not have a story.

One time, he listened to a talk by a man who had climbed the world’s highest peaks with one leg. He felt that the man had an advantage over him in terms of overcoming adversity.

Stumped, he hired a coach, who advised him to look back on his life in terms of 5 year chunks. 0 to 5 years of age, 6 to 10, 11 to 15, 16 to 20 and so on. Then, he should easily be able to identify stories of overcoming adversity.

If you do this, you will find that your stories of adversity are everywhere.

EVERY ADVERSITY CARRIES THE SEED OF A BENEFIT

Tom Beal realized that he had overcome a lot of adversity because of the circumstances of his birth. He had been born to teenagers, his mother 17 and his father 19, shortly after the time that abortion became legal. His parents were pressured to get an abortion but they persevered.

Tom grew up around a lot of adversity and chaos. He saw four divorces and six marriages, had attended 9 different schools by 8th grade and lived in trailers on welfare.

He wouldn’t change a thing, because he realized that it gave him the foundation to handle bigger problems and enjoy the benefits he does today. As Napoleon Hill said, “Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit.”

Sometimes that benefit comes after a week, or after 20 years, but it’s always there if you can find it. Never believe that adversity is your downfall. It can be your best asset, both in building character and through sharing them with others.
