Do You Know Who You’re Marketing To?

How much do you know about the people on your list?

Do you know whether they’re male, female, old, young? Do you know what they care about and what they want? Do you know the reason they signed up to hear from you?

If you don’t know who you’re marketing to, you’ll find it very difficult to capture their attention and make an irresistible offer. If you try to appeal to everyone, you’ll appeal to no one.

In this video, filmed at the Traffic Summit during the Titanium Mastermind, Darin Adams explains the importance of knowing your audience and targeting your message.


Darin Adams used to present a number of different TV shows.

One of them went from 5.00 a.m. to 9.00 a.m. Who watches TV during those hours? Moms, old people, children, shift workers – just about every demographic. It’s a huge audience.

Another show he hosted went from 11.00 a.m. to noon. Who watches TV during that hours? Stay at home moms. Just that one demographic accounted for 90% of the audience.

The early morning show didn’t really know its audience, but the late morning show did.

The late morning show was able to target its message towards the topics that stay at home moms care about – what to make for dinner that night, what are the latest fashions, how to increase their relationships with their family.


Just like TV shows target the message to their audience, you should do the same with your daily emails and throughout your marketing.

Do you know what kind of people are on your list? Are they male, female, old, young? What are their interests? What do they care about?

The more you know about your audience, the more you can cutomize your messaging to them. Then, people are far less likely to delete your emails when they get them, because you talk about topics they care about.

Decide exactly who your marketing is aimed at, and tailor your message to suit that audience. The more specific, the more effective. If you try to sell to everyone, you sell to no one.
